The Port of Philadelphia’s Southport Auto Terminal is in the heart of the US Mid-Atlantic population center making it an ideal distribution point for automobiles and ro/ro cargoes. Near-dock rail intermodal facilities provide unsurpassed access throughout the USA and Canada via CSX and Norfolk Southern.
In the second quarter of 2019, PhilaPort will complete its $93 million Southport Auto Terminal portion of the overall Port Development Plan. The improvements made through the Plan include new acreage, a new berth and improvements to existing facilities.
PhilaPort’s Southport Auto Terminal currently processes over 150,000 cars per year. Southport Auto Terminal now adds to PhilaPort an additional 155 acres of paved and fenced, above the 100-year flood plain. Additionally, a new VPC site has been built to accommodate more autos. These upgrades will give PhilaPort the ability to handle in excess of 350,000 vehicles per year.
With its partners, DVR and GLOVIS, PhilaPort has a goal is to double car throughput capacity and at the same time facilitate handling of the current business more efficiently. The improvements will also allow the partnership to jointly pursue other OEMs for both import and export business.
