Former CEO of JLR and Renault, Thierry Bolloré, has taken a new role as director of About:Energy, a battery technology start-up providing battery measurement and modelling software services to the automotive, aerospace and manufacturing sectors.

Bolloré be responsible for shaping About:Energy’s automotive and partnership strategy, according to the company.

“Our industry is entering a crucial phase of its transition to electrification with battery modelling and development playing an increasingly important role in every OEM’s future product development strategy,” said Bolloré.

He added that as demand for batteries continues to grow About:Energy was in a good position to support the industry given the progress it had made in 18 months in securing automotive OEMs as customers.

Bolloré stepped down from his role as CEO of JLR at the end of last year. He joined the carmaker as CEO in September 2020, replacing Ralf Speth. He was previously CEO of Renault but left when the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (RNM) Alliance reorganised operations.

Bolloré has 30 years of experience in the automotive industry beginning in 1990 when he joined Michelin before leaving for parts maker Faurecia in 2005.

About:Energy, founded in 2021 by Gavin White and Kieran O’Regan, following their doctorate work at Imperial College London and the University Birmingham, provides data to support strategic decision making across the supply chain from cell selection to end-of-life analysis. The company’s software platform The Voltt supports in-house battery development programmes by reducing development costs while integrating with existing modelling software, a strategy it said reduces time to market.

Ealier this year the start-up secured £1.5m investment from companies including High Sage Ventures, Vireo Ventures, OakNorth Bank CEO Rishi Khosla, Plug and Play Ventures and and Electric Revolution Ventures.

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome Thierry to our Board – his experience, credibility, and industry knowledge will prove invaluable as we continue to scale and support a growing number of customers,” said co-founder and CEO, Gavin White.
