Register now - Automotive Logistics livestream: Making packaging automation work for the automated plant

Automation on the production line is delivering real gains in productivity and line-side ergonomics, but it places new demands on packaging: tighter accuracy, much earlier development and costs that aren’t always fully reflected in equipment business cases. Join Automotive Logistics’ latest livestream to hear how industry leaders are designing packaging for automated operations.

Automotive plants are increasingly automating the movement of predictable, high-volume parts, both in supporting efficiency and in reducing the physical demands placed on line-side operators.

However, once a plant specifies automated equipment, packaging needs to meet its requirements. Robots need parts presented in the same position every time, which demands tighter accuracy than a manual pick would tolerate, and that is harder to deliver where parts vary in geometry, weight and fragility. Packaging also has to be developed alongside equipment that may still be in design, bringing development forward and requiring integration and validation before production. For packaging teams, this can bring additional workload, coordination, and cost.

This livestream explores where automation is delivering value inside automotive plants, what it demands of packaging design and development, and how packaging teams can build an investment case that accounts for the full cost rather than the equipment alone.

Key topics:

  • What automation demands of packaging: Dimensional accuracy and consistent part presentation, part-specific dunnage, and development timelines that increasingly need to run alongside equipment design rather than follow it.

  • Building the total business case: Why packaging investment is an important part of the automation equation, and how to consider packaging spend, equipment spend and time saved on the line together when assessing the overall return.

  • Managing variation: Multi-model lines, offline sequencing areas and pick-to-light systems, where automation can support operator instructions and decision-making without fully automating part movement.
