Automotive plants are increasingly automating the movement of predictable, high-volume parts. Parts can be manufactured, packed at the production line, collected by automated vehicles and delivered either to storage or directly to assembly. This approach works best when the part, the container and the material flow are all standardised.

Most automotive supply chains, however, deal with parts that vary in geometry, weight and fragility, are held in part-specific dunnage and require programme-specific pack patterns. The further operations move away from a single, high-volume flow, the more challenging the case for automation becomes.
