The Chennai plant in India was the first launched by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, beginning production in 2010.

Renault’s full acquisition of the Chennai plant reinforces the company’s international growth strategy – expanding local production, strengthening supplier ties and boosting exports from India.

Renault Group has acquired Nissan’s 51% stake in the Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL) manufacturing plant in Chennai, as part of its International Game Plan 2027 strategy.

The acquisition makes Renault the sole owner of the facility, which has produced over 2.8 million vehicles and 4.6 million engines and gearboxes since its launch in 2010. The Chennai plant will continue producing Nissan models and remains a key industrial asset for the Renault Group’s international growth. The company also highlighted the facility’s role in supporting future exports and the development of modular, multi-energy vehicle platforms.

“India is a key market for Renault Group,” said François Provost, the company’s CEO. “With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India.”

Renault said the acquisition will enable it to scale up operations in India by leveraging an established supplier base of over 300 local partners and a strong outbound logistics network. To date, 1.2 million vehicles from the Chennai plant have been exported to more than 100 countries.

The French automaker also noted recent investments in the country, including the launch of a new version of the Renault Triber and plans to introduce four additional locally developed models. Renault opened its largest design centre outside France in Mumbai earlier this year and continues to operate an engineering centre in India in partnership with Nissan.

To lead the company’s expanded operations in the region, Renault has appointed Stéphane Deblaise as CEO of Renault Group in India, effective September 1. Deblaise previously served as CEO of Renault Korea and has held senior roles in China and Latin America.

“Stéphane Deblaise, with his strong international experience and deep knowledge of our entire value chain, is ideally positioned to design and implement our strategy in the region,” Provost said.
