The Association of European Vehicle Logistics (ECG), along with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and a group of OEMs, has published the first methodology to calculate and report on automotive supply chain emissions.

The groups began collaborating on the project in February this year with the objective of creating a standard methodology which automotive companies could use to be able to compare modes of transport and their emissions within their supply chains. The methodology is compliant with the global ISO 14083 standard guidance on reporting of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).


By using the industry-endorsed roadmap, automotive companies can be more precise and standardised in their transport emissions calculations and reporting, according to the ECG. The group said the widespread participation by industry leaders – across LSPs, OEMs and parts suppliers, as well as external consultants International Transfer Center for Logistics (ITCL) – highlights a “collective commitment to mitigating the environmental impact of logistics processes in the automotive industry”.

The guide lays out the reporting responsibility of each unit of the supply chain, and how detailed the reporting needs to be, so that there is transparency, accountability and collaboration among all stakeholders. It also provides examples for master data report parameters and application examples, making it easier to report end-to-end on emissions across the whole supply chain.

Dr Marcus Bollig, managing director of Products and Value Creation at VDA said: “The development of a standard methodology for calculating and reporting emissions in the automotive supply chain is an important step towards achieving climate targets.”

The ECG previously published guidance on reporting ro-ro emissions to allow shipping lines to have a reference guide which will support them and OEMs.
