Steve Hill’s understanding of global operations and experience in sales and service will further GM’s success in China, according to GM

The carmaker said Hill will use GM's global manufacturing footprint, strong brand, and global distribution channels to accelerate export growth.

Hill has led a series of business restructurings in China, helping the company to achieve profitability in the market for four consecutive quarters. A spokesperson for GM said that the establishment of the new role stemmed from the opportunity the company saw to grow exports across its global business.

“Steve Hill has a deep understanding of our global operations and extensive experience in leading critical sales, marketing and aftersales service, which will be key factors for his success in his new role,” said Rory Harvey, executive vice-president and president of global markets at GM, to whom Hill will report.

Hill’s role is focused on vehicle exports but it does not affect existing reporting lines in GM’s finished vehicle logistics business. Hill will be looking at further export growth opportunities in that sector, said GM’s spokesperson.

“In addition to delivering vehicles to Chinese consumers, our joint ventures, especially SAIC-GM-Wuling, have also achieved significant growth in their export business,” said Hill. “This has made an important contribution to improving GM's profitability in the international market and has enormous future growth potential.”

Hill has held several leadership positions in global marketing, sales and aftersales service, including vice-president of sales, service and marketing for the US, and vice-president of global customer care and aftersales service.

John Roth will be replacing Hill as senior vice-president of GM and president of GM China. He moves from his role as vice-president of Global Cadillac. GM said Roth will continue the turnaround of the carmaker’s operations in China, where it has succeeded in being the only global OEM to increase market share in 2025.
