The car terminal at the Port of Gothenburg has been renamed Gothenburg International Auto and RoRo Terminal (GIART)

It was announced in January 2025 that Wallenius Wilhelmsen would take over as the vehicle and ro-ro terminal operator at the Port of Gothenburg from February 2026 on a 12-year concession agreement that will see it invest €6m ($6.1m) in modernising the existing infrastructure.

The Oslo-based global shipper has taken the reins from Logent Ports and Terminals, which had been operating the terminal since 2011.

The Port of Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia, handling around 20% of Swedish trade and more than half of all container traffic. In total, 251,000 new vehicles were handled at the port in 2025.

GIART boasts two quay positions, 240,000 sq. m (c. 258,000 sq. ft) of terminal space, rail connectivity and pre-delivery inspection (PDI) facilities.

The terminal offers full ro-ro and terminal handling services, with Wallenius Wilhelmsen planning phased upgrades to expand value-added processing.

“We are very optimistic about Wallenius Wilhelmsen's ability to continue developing the car terminal at the Port of Gothenburg," said Göran Eriksson, CEO at the Port of Gothenburg. "The company has presented a strong business plan and has credibly demonstrated how they will achieve the volume targets they have committed to and operate a competitive terminal with a customer-centric approach."

With sustainability a key focus for the port, it features EV charging infrastructure and energy-efficient systems.

About Wallenius Wilhelmsen

Headquarted in Oslo, Norway, the Wallenius Wilhelmsen group specialises in roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) shipping and vehicle logistics, managing the distribution of cars, trucks, rolling equipment, and breakbulk to customers globally. It operates around 125 vessels servicing 15 trade routes to six continents, a global inland distribution network, 70 processing centres and eight marine terminals.

As expected, Wallenius Wilhelmsen has started operating the terminal through a newly established, independent company created solely for the purpose of operating the terminal – although the name of this company has still not been made public.

The company has said its aim of operating GIART is to form a partnership with the Port of Gothenburg, acting as an integrated supply chain partner and making GIART a go-to hub for all carriers and customers.

“When we were awarded the contract, we talked about a strategic milestone for our network and a shared ambition to co-create a Scandinavian hub," stated John Felitto, COO of logistics services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen. "Today, that vision becomes reality. With GIART now fully operational, we are ready to deliver reliable, efficient and innovative services for all. These services will strengthen supply chains across the region."
