James Bell, head of corporate communications at Kia America, reflected on the 2023 hailstorm that struck the company’s West Point, Georgia plant, damaging thousands of vehicles. Rather than treating the event as a one-off disruption, Kia used it as a catalyst to rethink its finished vehicle logistics infrastructure.
Kia moved quickly, partnering with Vehicle Protection Structures (VPS) to deploy protective shelters across its vehicle storage areas. Within weeks, agreements were in place and implementation began.
Combining protection with sustainability
The project evolved beyond vehicle protection. By integrating solar panels into the shelter structures, working alongside external stakeholders such as Georgia Power, Kia transformed a risk mitigation measure into a source of renewable energy generation. This dual-purpose approach demonstrates how logistics infrastructure can deliver both operational resilience and sustainability benefits.
Despite the scale of the transformation, Bell emphasised that the changes did not disrupt vehicle processing operations at the plant.
Instead, the solution enhanced the facility’s resilience without compromising throughput or efficiency, an important benchmark for future logistics innovation.
Bell suggested similar solutions could be expanded to other facilities as Kia continues to adapt to new risks, market conditions and growth opportunities.
