Transport provider, Ewals Cargo Care, is using its intermodal Mega Huckepack XLS curtain-sided trailer to ship vehicle tyres by truck and rail between Bettembourg in Luxembourg and Le Boulou in the South of France. It is the first time that tyres have been shipped in curtained trailers by rail according to the company.

Ewals said that shipping tyres in curtained trailers by rail has previously been impossible because of the cargo bulging in transit, which resulted in it becoming over-width for the rail service.

However, the Mega Huckepack XLS trailer, which Ewals Cargo Care launched two years ago, has reinforced and adaptable side curtains, with no loose parts, and has proved successful in the first trail shipment carried out for its customer Goodyear.

“Now that the first trial load has been shipped, and the rail authorities have given its approval, this opens the way to move both tyres and other potentially bulging loads using the Mega Huckepack XLS trailer as a European rail solution,” said the company in a statement.

The curtained trailers, which are manufactured by Krone and Schmitz, were developed and patented by Ewals. Last year the company shipped its first Mega Huckepack trailer on the new ECC rail connection between Genk in Belgium and Curtici in Romania.
