Deutsche Bahn’s (DB) logistics subsidiary, Schenker, has announced a restructuring of its management board, including the consolidation of certain board divisions and the addition of a new one.

From January, the company will combine its air and ocean freight and land transport board divisions into a new ‘Freight’ division. Ewald Kaiser, currently the management board member heading up land transport, will be responsible for the new division.

“The aim is to tie these three product areas closer together to quickly improve integrated transport products and services and make better use of growth potential,” said a company statement.

Within this freight division, a new organisational unit named Global Land Transport will also be created “and will standardise and promote the development of land transport outside Europe”.

In addition a new management board division called Commercial DB Schenker and Contract Logistics will be created and headed up by Tom Schmitt, who was given responsibility for contract logistics and supply chain management on the company’s supervisory board last year.

"By reducing the number of members on the management board from seven to six and reorganising the board divisions, we intend to satisfy market requirements for fast and consistent solutions for our customers and to serve as a role model for creating more efficient structures", said Jochen Thewes, CEO of Schenker.

Reiner Keiken, most recently chairman of the management board at Kühne & Nagel in Hamburg, has replaced Kaiser as CEO of the Europe region.
