Supply chain services provider UTi Worldwide has opened a 21,000-square-metre logistics facility in Romulus, near Detroit, Michigan that brings together contract logistics and freight forwarding services under one roof and serves both the automotive and high-tech industries.

The company had previously been using two separate buildings that were 17km apart but said the combined facility offers cost reductions as a result of sharing equipment and utilities, as well as offering the opportunity to share best practices.

"While other companies are leaving the Detroit area, UTi is making a substantial investment in support of our clients in the automotive and consumer electronics industries,” said Rob Chanona, UTi’s vice president, contract logistics operations for the Americas. “We believe that Detroit plays a pivotal role in the automotive supply chain for the NAFTA region, connecting the dots among the tier one suppliers in Ontario, Canada, the Midwest, and Mexico.”
